ABOUT ME
December 8, 1999

Hi! As I'm sure you are aware, my name is Ace Armstrong. This is my website, a labour of love that I hope you'll find enjoyable. It's one of my many projects, many of which I am making available here for you to (hopefully) enjoy.

If you want to know who I am, you should probably just poke around this site and discover for yourself. I have a hard time trying to define exactly "who" or "what" I am. I guess the simple answer would be that I am a performing artist, radio personality, writer, vocalist, political activist, designer and computer geek. But, you know what? I don't think those simple terms get beyond the most superficial level of who I am.

I guess if I had to boil it down, I would define myself most as a "creative" personality. By "creative" I don't mean that I am some fantastically talented, artistic person. (I do, however, hope that you enjoy my creations, and find them somewhat pleasing!) What I mean by "creative" is that I am constantly driven to create. I really do understand what artists mean when they say that their art is the most important thing in the world to them, because I feel that same urge. Ever since I was a small child, I've been writing fiction, creating my own worlds through stories and games, designing cards for my parents and writing songs. As an adult, I've expanded that urge into the performing arts (music, comedy, acting and radio), graphic arts (website design and desktop publishing), literary art (short fiction and essays) and "recreation arts" (computer gaming). I created a computer BBS thatstayed on-line for five years (until the internet made the computer BBS scene obsolete), and even while I perform daily on WFAT-FM (Kalamazoo, Michigan), I have done some really fun stuff: I helped found a business (Twilight Media & Design), I've written plenty of short fiction, composed some songs, and designed lots and lots of websites for people who needed them. All that while making lots of friends in Kalamazoo.

My urge to create has even led me to work on creating something even more important: a better world. I have become involved in a number of political campaigns, and am heavily involved in human rights issues and in the "living wage campaign." It is my belief that, as human beings, we have a duty to ourselves and to those around us to leave the world a better place than it was when we entered it. It sounds corny and oh-so- cliché, but it's something in which I truly believe.

I am also a person who loves to learn new things. Maybe I have that ever-elusive "thrill seeking" gene, and I'm just too cowardly or smart to try bungee jumping. Regardless, gathering knowledge is like a treasure hunt to me. I don't think I can describe the thrill that learning something new or making a new mental connection brings to me. It's a completely natural, ultimately compelling high that drives me to delve into new facets of science and history on a regular basis. NPR, CNN, USA Today and the Discovery Channel are my main media influences, and I spend every moment I can immersed in learning about the universe around me.

ABOUT THIS SITE
I have created this website for a number of reasons. First, it's fun. This whole "creative urge" thing isn't necessarily the curse I seem to be making it out to be. I really enjoy creating new things, and this website helps me channel this urge while giving me a chance to learn new techniques and develop new styles. It also gives me the opportunity to share some of my work, my passion for the art of radio broadcasting, and my love of science and education. Of course, it also provides me a way of promoting those political and philosphical views I mentioned, as well as my own performing arts career(s).

This site is, then, equal parts art, promotional tool, ego trip, gallery, portfolio, self-analysis and resource. It is in a constant state of construction, and I hope you enjoy visiting it as much as I enjoy constructing it. As always, I do appreciate your comments and suggestions via email.
